Most of us feel depressed from time to time. Losing a job, breaking up with a romantic partner are examples of events that can precipitate a depressed mood in many people. However, major depressive disorder includes five or more of the following the same 2-week period of time: feeling sad most of the day, diminished interest in pleasurable activities, decrease or increase in appetite, insomnia, fatigue, feeling worthless recurrent thoughts of death.
Excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not and lasting at least six months. Difficulty controlling the worry, usually associated with three or more of the following: restlessness, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating or mind going blank, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbance
Some people differentiate “counseling” from “therapy” and “counselor” from “therapist.” It may also vary by state. In the State of Illinois, to provide psychotherapy, one must be a master’s level licensed clinician, a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
